Ensuring the Success of the Healthcare System
We work with a number of health service providers to ensure the success of the healthcare system. One example is managing Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patients. ALC patients occupy hospital beds, but could be cared for elsewhere in the community if the appropriate services were available. Patients in hospital awaiting transitions to a more appropriate setting create challenges in patient flow and access to the Emergency Department (ED).
The ALC rate is a calculation of the total number of ALC days divided by the total number of inpatient days in a given time period, multiplied by 100. The ALC rate continues to remain a critical challenge for Ontario hospitals that requires innovative solutions. We strive to meet our target of 25% for a total ALC rate; the average ALC rate for our peer hospitals is 16.4% and we continue to make improvements through focused efforts.
